My students need materials for a before/after school learning group to help them catch up to their peers in reading. Such as sight word readers, upper and lower case letters.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning is hard work especially when you are not only learning how to read, write and do math but when you are also learning english. I need to teach my students that learning is fun. The more you know, the more places you'll go.....

My students attend a school that has increased from 589 students to 730 in one year with class sizes up to 28.

They attend a school who's test scores are going in the wrong direction in spite of the hard work everyone is putting in. They come expecting the high tech show that comes with watching television and playing video games without experiencing the joy and the learning that comes from playing basic games. The fun that comes with taking turns, talking with your friends and the excitement of almost winning. They come to me without the basic skills needed to become lifelong learners. I would like to begin to change that.

My Project

I have requested 4 sets of sight word reading books, 2 fiction and 2 non fiction. These books will not only provide additional independent reading practice for my students but will also help my students begin to think of themselves as readers. So many of our classroom books are too difficult for them to read right now that they just give up. I have also selected 2 decoding games and 2 alphabet puzzles. With these resources I hope to slip in some basic reading skills without the children realizing that they are learning. In order to play these "games" they have to use all that they know about letter names and sounds. Those that they do not know they can learn from a friend. These activities will be the "reward" for working hard with their reading. All of these resources should work together to give my students a rigorous after school experience.

Each year I have many students join my classroom that have not yet begun to read.

When children are beginning to read they need access to many many books. They need books to read in school, books to read at home, books to read on the bus. They need mountains of books to keep them interested in reading. Students learn best through games and fresh materials. These materials will help my students begin their learning journey.
