This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low income/high poverty neighborhood, I understand the struggles my pre-k students go through. I strive to make our classroom a safe and nurturing environment in which they can learn and grow. Being an IB school, one of our essential agreements is that we come ready to learn everyday.
Despite everything going on in their home lives, they somehow pull it all together and come to school with questions on their minds and curiosity in their hearts.
They refer to their personalized learning plans, and visit learning centers that will help them with their individual learning needs. They stay on task, and are persistent. They become excited when they have their "a ha!" moments, and are filled with pride when showing off their work in our showcase at the end of each unit. I have learned so much about patience, persistence, and tolerance from them; for this, I am forever indebted!
My Project
Our classroom library is pretty lacking. We were combined with a classroom of newcomers to pre-k for our specials classes, and many of our books ended up in our book hospital beyond repair. My students know how to take care of their books, and would love to get some new books.
I always have students asking me "When will Lending Library be open?" I let them know that as soon as we get more books, we can open it so they can take some books home to read with their families.
Right now, if we opened lending library...we wouldn't have any books on our shelves! We are asking for books for an upcoming unit on responsibility for the earth, some math books, multi-cultural books, and Elhert and Keats books for author studies.
