Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One of my biggest goals for my first graders is to build their independence and confidence as learners. This is what helps children become lifelong learners. If they can learn scholarly behaviors at a young age, they will be more likely to continue these behaviors throughout their lives.
My students are energetic, bright, and absolutely love to learn.
Our school is located in a low-income neighborhood in New York City, and all of our kids receive free lunch. Many come from difficult home lives, yet still show up to school every day with a huge desire to learn. Our school is the hub of the community. It is a small school, where parents, teachers, and administrators all know each other well. Teachers reach out and help students, even if they have never taught them. The students at my school strive to become better every day, no matter what obstacles stand in their way.
My Project
I realize that At-Your-Seat Storage Racks seem like boring and unimportant items to request. However, I am positive that this will increase independent learning in my classroom. I teach in a classroom that services students with special needs. Transitions, routines, and organization need to be explicitly taught. Having all of their learning materials right at their seat would foster responsible learning. Students would be responsible for keeping it neat, and they would not have to travel around the classroom to gather supplies during a transition, which would save precious minutes of learning time. This past year, we had all notebooks in buckets, and by the time we had students get their materials, we would be 5-10 minutes behind on our lesson. If our students had these Seat Sacks, transitions would be significantly smoother and faster. Seat Sacks would save about 30 minutes a day in transitions, and that would mean they would save 5,400 hours of learning time per year!
Having effective transitions help students, especially those with special needs, feel safe and secure in the classroom.
When they know what to expect, they have nothing to fear and it becomes easier to learn. Seat Sacks would make transitions more predictable and less hectic, helping them feel secure enough to do amazing things as learners!
