My Students
My students are resilient and determined to be successful. They have survived the Harvey flooding and freezing weather. The students are still smiling while dealing with the aftermath of challenges they had no control over. Most of my students are low income and from single-parent families. Some have parents that are incarcerated, and they live with other family members. However, the school is the one constant in their life. I stress the importance of reading and how reading can save their life.
My Project
I have selected books that will empower students I hope, focusing on their culture and overcoming home obstacles. I choose groups of books so students can discuss different situations together.
The books such as "The Pact" may have the situations that students identify with and open a window of hope in dealing with their own situations at home or school.
The Pact is about a group of boys that grew up poor in the projects and they made a pact to become educated together against all odds. Their living situations are the same as some of the students I teach.
