Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

8th Grade Science Students – Astronomy can be overwhelming when presented strictly in a textbook format. My students need some actual experience with the heavens to develop a working interest in our planet, our solar system, our galaxy and the universe.

Our school is in California, and my students come from diverse backgrounds.

Our biggest obstacle is that we have almost 80% of our students on free and reduced lunch, and they do not have the resources at home to support their learning. Many of our students have very little experience with the natural world. Astronomy is a high interest topic that appeals to 8th graders as well as parents and family. We have had astronomy nights in the past.

My Project

I would like three binoculars that will facilitate viewing the moon and lend some reality to our student-made, moving models, of the phases of the moon that allow students to tell time around the world using the phases of the moon. This past year, the simple act of looking in the sky during lunch generated great interest. Many students had never noticed the moon out in the middle of the day and demonstrated a sincere interest in the phenomena. Binoculars will enhance the experience by using them during the school day as well as family astronomy night. Binoculars also increase the number of stars visible from the city and will be used to identify stars and constellations. The star charts will guide students and their families as they view the night sky. Knowledge of astronomy will enrich an individual for a lifetime and help develop an understanding of how we fit into the larger picture.

My students need 3 binoculars to better view the moon, planets, and stars.

All students, especially 400 8th graders, will have access to the binoculars periodically before school, at lunch, during class, and at the family nights. Viewing will be a continuous activity all year. The binoculars will enhance their knowledge and understanding of our universe and in turn, enrich their lives. An appreciation of the universe promotes an interest in science because it stirs the imagination.
