This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the Special Education Resource Room Teacher at high-needs Elementary school New York. I provide small group instruction to students in First grade through Fifth grade who are struggling with reading and writing in their classroom.

Many of my students have lost their motivation to read because the books on their reading level are too simplistic or are on subjects they are not interested in. After struggling through the books that were available at the school and asking comprehension questions students didn't want to answer, I happened upon a solution. I brought my copy of the "Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo -- one of my all time favorite books -- to school and we began reading it together. The students LOVED the book! They couldn't wait to read it each day and didn't want to end when the period was over. I picked other favorite books off my bookshelf from home -- The Series of Unfortunate Events books, Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems, The Westing Game...and my students couldn't get enough! I had stumbled upon something spectacular and my students were motivated and making progress!

So, to keep the reading momentum going over the summer, I would like to gift each one of my students with a well-loved book, on their reading level, to read over the summer and keep on their bookshelf. I hope that this will continue to inspire a love of reading that will carry through their academic careers.
