I have the joy of working with seven- and eight-year-olds in a suburban community school. Our population is going through dramatic changes, and we have had a large increase in at-risk populations. This includes students who are homeless, economically disadvantaged, and/or who are learning English as a second language.
Our school prides itself on being an integral part of the community.
We believe each child is able to have a positive impact on society and that our purpose is to provide each one with the tools and skills to reach their full potential. Each person, whether a student, parent, or staff member, is valued and appreciated.
My Project
We recently began an multi-grade level book club that meets after school once a week. In this book club, students and staff not only discuss a Kate DiCamillo novel, but we also build and grow relationships as well as literary skills.
Through this project, we will be able to continue this book club by reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.
This will continue our own book club journey and help us do a complete author study on Kate DiCamillo.
This project is for 31 copies of the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. This will provide a copy of the book for each student, ensuring that cost does not prohibit a student from participating. These books become treasured fixtures in the student's own bookshelves and library as they read and reread these brilliant and award winning novels.
