Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being in the 5th grade and not being able to spell or write a sentence. You have so much to tell but you just can't seem to get your thoughts down on paper. With a good teacher and good resources, you slowly find your voice throughout the year in your writing class. Now you are unstoppable!

My students are resilient.

They come from broken homes, illiterate parents, violent home lives. Yet when they come to school they are empowered. With a magic weapon of a pencil and a paper, they can find their power. My school educates over 500 low-income, Title-1 students who know bits and pieces of two languages, who struggle with hunger, obtaining clothes that fit properly, and having personal space in their homes (that is if they have a home). Yet these students persevere everyday as they come to school, eager to learn, to express themselves, to be loved and valued. These students, most of them hopefully, will find the strength to break the cycle of poverty that is inherited generation after generation in their families. We fight for these kids at my school. We are like the wise Sensei, training the future Samurai soldiers who will fight for their lives by obtaining an education and transforming their futures into that of success and happiness.

My Project

Writing is a skill that is usually last mastered by students learning English. The resources requested in this grant will help me support my students in the art of writing. Erin Gruwell, author of "The Freedom Writers" used writing to change her students' lives and the world around them. I hope to do the same. We need writing journals, sentence building activities, grammar center activities, grammar warm ups and more to become awesome writers for the 21st Century! These resources will teach students the skills needed to be a proficient writer. We will do grammar activities that will help them acquire English. We will learn how to write compositions such as poetry, narratives, opinions and persuasive pieces, information texts and research reports. They will each have their own materials that they can take home and keep at the end of the year. A portfolio of the writing they did throughout the year that they worked so hard on, that they are proud of. My students will learn not only the writing standards for their grade, but also they will learn what the expression "The pen is mightier than the sword" really means!

We have limited resources at our school.

We have to copy out of workbooks and use spiral notebooks for compositions. It is so much better for each child to have his or her own, colorful copy of materials and resources. They will value the assignments more and work harder to complete them. These resources will help change my students' lives for the better by giving them the knowledge of literacy! This will extend to middle school, high school and college.
