I teach 3rd grade at an inner city school in Houston, TX. Some of the students have been exposed to gang activity, drugs, real safety threats. I am a new to the teaching profession, but it didn't take long for me hear of some of the stories from my students. Most of the students at my school are Hispanic and many live below or at the poverty line. I would like to expose my students to another world through books. These, they can take home and read and be entertained as they are confined to indoor activities. As a new teacher, I don't have the resources to provide a wide variety of books that the students can take out of the classroom. I would like to purchase Phillis C. Hunter Classroom Libraries (100 books) from Scholastic. The set includes a diverse range of classic, contemporary, and award winning authors. These books will appeal to every student. Subjects range from boy/girl topics to science, and history to the humanities. The students will not only be exposed to a whole new world, but they also will be increasing comprehension and vocabulary. As a teacher of young minds, I feel that it is my duty to try and give my students every opportunity to succeed. Some of these students have never been to a public library nor do they own any books. This would be a chance to get them headed in a positive direction and to see school as an avenue to a better life.
