My Students

I have my students write endlessly. This is a skill they will need in their future academic endeavors, as well as in the real world. By the end of the school year I want my students to have a comprehensive portfolio of their written work. My biggest challenge is being able to store/save this work.

My students are inner city youths, all of whom are on the free and reduced price lunch program.

Most come from low-income households and they often come to class without even the most basic of supplies such as paper, pens, and folders. For most of them the $5-$10 cost of a flash drive is simply an insurmountable expense. I would wager to save that at least 70% of my students are college bound. While this is gratifying and reassuring, my biggest fear is that these students will embark on their post-secondary endeavors unprepared. It is my personal goal as their English teacher to send them off to college with a portfolio that showcases their writing. My students' work grows noticeably throughout the year and it would benefit them immensely to be able to collect a digital (as that is the way of the future) dossier of their most stellar works in order to prove their abilities to future instructors.

My Project

Students will use these flash drives to save all the writing and written projects they complete in my class. As they progress throughout the year they will learn the virtues of written expression in addition to other essential skills pertaining to formal academic writing (MLA formatting, etc.). As they complete this work in my class, I lament the fact that they are often unable to save their work or, more specifically, that they only have access to MY flash drive in order to save their work. Students in each class will use these flash drives to save their work and make sure that their work is safely secured and ready for them to continue writing next class period. Most of these students have a lack of stability in their home lives, personal/social lives, etc. For me to afford them this modicum of stability (the ability to know that their hard work is kept securely) is a priceless thing.

This donation will make an immense difference in not only my students' abilities to perform academically, but will assist greatly to boost their confidence, which I feel is regrettably lacking in their writing.

Knowing that their work is saved and secure will reassure them that their compositions and efforts are not pointless. I can't tell you how many times a student has had their work erased from a laptop or school server, only to throw their hands in the air and give up.
