My Students
Did you see the movie 'The Maze Runner'? Did you read the book? It's all the rage among my middle schoolers. Some of the kids have seen the film and really want to read the whole 'Maze Runner' series. There are four books in all. Please help us acquire the series for our school library.
As I write this, there are three seventh -grade aides helping me in the school library.
All of them saw 'The Maze Runner' over the weekend. One even saw it twice. They are excited about this project - they want to read the other books in the series a.s.a.p! This morning, I had a similar reaction from a group of sixth graders who'd come to check out books. They have to get their hands on 'The Maze Runner'! Why should you help these kids, though? Why can't they buy the books themselves? Well, please bear in mind that over 80% of the kids in our K-8 center come from low-income households. Most of their parents are immigrants. They have low-paying jobs in the tourism industry. Our school is in South Florida, by the way. Our kids' moms and dads tend not to take them to the public library. If our students are going to become full-time readers, they are going to have to get their books from the SCHOOL library.
My Project
Teenagers read whatever is fashionable. (I guess we all do...) In the last few years, we've moved from 'Harry Potter' to 'Twilight', from 'Twilight' to 'Divergent', from 'Divergent' to 'The Fault In Our Stars'. Now all our middle schoolers want 'The Maze Runner'. Interestingly, I asked the sixth graders who came down this morning if they'd like traditional print versions of the novels, or e-book versions. They split about 50/50. That's why this project is asking for both traditional and e-books. The 'normal books' come from a library book supplier. They are fully-processed, i.e. they come cataloged and with bar codes. Most important, they are extra tough, made for years of use. The e-books can be downloaded onto laptops, iPads and cell phones. I'm sure that both varieties of the 'Maze Runner' novels will be in constant demand for years.
The demand will be stimulated, of course, by the release of three more movies.
Don't believe the twaddle that kids aren't interested in reading.
Give the kids the books that they want, and they'll read voraciously. No teen books are hotter than 'The Maze Runner' right now. Please help me get these books to our kids! I know they'd really appreciate it!
