Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Seventh grade is such a fun time for students entering middle school. They are "too cool" for elementary, but still love coloring, fuzzy blankets, and read-alouds. As a 5th year teacher, many of my supplies are starting to have a lot of wear and tear from use by over 600 students through the years. My students deserve a classroom that looks and feels clean, organized, and inviting.

Many of my students come from homes that do not feel safe, I want my classroom to continue to reflect the warm, accepting environment we have worked so hard to cultivate.

The area rug will be a refresh to our current comfy "puddle" zone with bean bags and couch cushions. This area is a space for students to practice independent work or collaborate with a small group using lap trays and personal white boards.

This year I am also adding additional Vertical Nonpermanent surfaces (VNPS), whiteboards, to support the work we have been doing with Building Thinking Classrooms to help support our mathematicians with risk-taking and subject knowledge retention. My students are such amazing, creative, and mathematical thinkers! These boards will support them in working on their feet, which promotes blood flow and active engagement, as well as help the mobility of knowledge because each group of students will be able to see all other groups' boards. Rolling whiteboards and whiteboard easels will create movable VNPS for students to utilize in small groups for student lead learning stations, empowering students to take control of their learning.
