In a school that serves about 1600 students in grades 7 through 12, my 7th and 8th-grade students are adjusting from elementary life to live on the big campus. They are very impressionable, full of questions, and high-energy!
These are bright, funny, technologically savvy, middle schoolers that are learning new social skills, new math skills and new survivor skills.
(yes, middle school can be a jungle sometimes). My students are fearless when it comes to technology as most 21st century learners are but they still need to learn how to be resilient learners. So, at the end of the day, they learn much more than just math in my classes; they learn how to endure, they learn how to problem solve, and more importantly they learn how to work.
My Project
Math can be intimidating for many. Most of my students will say they "get it" but their work doesn't reflect that. These supplies that I have chosen are essential in checking for student understanding in class so that no one falls through the cracks.
Whiteboards, dry erase markers, Clipboards and other resources that I have listed will be used for assessment and supportive activities in learning basic math.
Basic consumables like pens, pencils, and erasers will be used for daily classwork. My hope is that having these available for those students when they need will help them feel secure and then in turn able to focus on learning. Paper folders will be used to hold their unit worksheets so that they don't have to carry around the heavy math books. Clipboards will be used for station rotations, while whiteboards and dry erase markers will be used for daily assessment in class. Clipco pocket sleeves will be used for the units that include graphing and geometry. A digital timer is used to keeping time during certain classroom tasks such as bellwork or math rotations. And lastly, the wall organizer and storage boxes will be used to hold student work and math. All of these tools provide my students the opportunity to show their work, check their answer, and more importantly share their responses and thought process with their peers.
