The Marriage of a Kindle and a Printer!

My students need to be able to print stories they write in Writing Workshop. This will also give them a chance to produce colored covers for their stories and reports. My students need to read on the Kindle.

My Students

My students love to read and write. My ELL students, although very successful in their own language, need assistance learning English. The Kindle can read the book to them as they follow along. They also love to write and publish stories. Having a printer would provide a way to print them.

My students live in the heart of St.

Louis. We have many cultures in our school, which makes it a fun environment to teach and learn in. Some of my students walk to school, others ride a bus, and some ride the city bus. I teach ELA and Social Studies to 16 -4th and 30- 5th Graders, so we have a lot of reading and writing going on! The students like to write their stories and share with the younger students in our building. Through this interaction, the students have been buddies and mentors for some of the younger children. This provides the students with much more than just writing, but with many of the character traits they will need to succeed in the world.

My Project

My ELL students will be able to use the Kindle in a center to read along. The students use the one computer we have in our room, but it doesn't read to them and many times they need assistance with the words or understanding the vocabulary. Different students read at different proficiency levels, but with the anonymity of the Kindle reader, no one will know who is reading what. So ELL readers do not have to be embarrassed to read among the other students. Currently when my 46 students finish a story, I end up typing and printing at home. This can take a few weeks! They can type, save on a flash drive and print in the room in one day! They would also be able to design covers and work on Social Studies Projects. The printer I choose is very cost affordable and important features such as automatic two-sided printing and advanced paper handling so we can maximize my budget!

The Kindle and the printer will provide my students with other ways to learn and share what they have learned.

My ELL students will start to feel more confidence in reading, all my writers will have the final piece in publishing they don't get as quickly as they will with the printer. These two items will make a huge impact on my students learning and motivation!
