This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work as a Licensed Social Worker at a Title I elementary school in the Las Vegas Valley. I find art therapy to be a very effective tool in my work with students. I love using it as a rapport building activity, but it is also a helpful calming strategy to implement with students experiencing grief/loss, anxiety/worry, anger, sadness.

Printing out a student's favorite superhero or cartoon character to color does not provide the same benefits true art therapy.

Actually, Renee van der Vennet and Susan Serice (2012) research reveals that engaging in a structured plaid-coloring activities, such as mandalas, can reduces anxiety significantly greater than coloring on a blank sheet of paper. Sau-Lai Lee (2018) found that there are therapeutic and centering components associated in creating mandalas. Creating/coloring a mandala provides a mindful experience that helps promotes calming and relaxing effect on the person engaging in the activity. It also boosts sense of unity between self and others (Curry & Kaser, 2011).

These are the goals for our school-wide Mandala Project. With the requested supplies we plan to educate and engage our students in individual, classroom and grade-level Mandala group projects. The student will learn about both the physical and mental health-healing benefits that mandalas can offer as a fun and creative method of coping. Additionally, we are expecting our students to feel accomplished in their mandala creations which will contribute in the beautification of our school campus, as their final grade-level mandalas pieces will be displayed throughout our campus. At the end, we plan to provide each of our students with mini mandala books that they can use at home.
