The Make(r) Wonder Robots Challenge
My students need Dash and Dot robots to take our coding club to new levels!
We are a suburban, Title 1, bilingual elementary school of about 550 students K-5. Our students primarily live in apartments and with about 70% on the free and reduced meal program, most do not have a lot at home. This is why our teachers and administrators strive to provide more than just the basics.
As a Leader in Me school, we strive to recognize the different leadership abilities in all students.
Teachers and leaders strive to not only provide solid academic foundations and meet the needs of all learners, but also give students opportunities to learn in a collaborative environment.
Each Friday, we offer "clubs" to provide students with opportunities that other students might get in extra-curricular activities. We want students to leave our schools as true leaders and that is why we promote the Leader in Me and the Engaged Learning Model.
Our school has a popular Maker Space. We also have a K-2 Coding Club and demand for another coding club in grades 3-5. Each of these students use our ONE Dash robot and have learned basic coding principals through their play. Adding additional Dash and Dot robots will allow us to expand and improve what we offer to students, meet the demand and most of all, expand the programs.
Steve Jobs said "Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.” Our students need to learn how to think.
Dash and Dot robots provide them with this in a clear, easy to understand and fun manner. We would love to use the robots in our Maker Space where students must complete increasingly difficult challenges. They would also allow us to continue our K-2 Coding Club and really challenge students to grasp the basics of coding. Most of all, we would like to have our oldest students participate in Wonder League challenges and competitions.
