My Students

My 4th and 5th grade students are part of a small K-5 school in Maine. Our classroom is the only classroom in our district that has 2 grades combined.

Classroom community is one of the most important elements at our school.

Students work together to build this classroom community. In the beginning of the year they establish criteria that is important to them. Each year traditional criteria is added. For example, be a respectful listener and be kind. This year students identified additional criteria to their poster including, give each other wait time, make eye contact with each other, and be a learner not a knower to their chart. All year students work closely together to build their classroom community and to meet academic goals. Their dedication to making their their classroom and school a safe, and positive learning environment is truly inspirational.

My Project

At the University of Maine Bryant Pond 4-H Camp and Learning Center, my students will gain experiences that will positively impact them for many years to come. As their teacher, I know the importance of experiencing the outdoors, team building, and goals setting.

Students learn about setting goals and how to achieve them with support and encouragement of their classmates and teachers.

For many students this is their first opportunity to be away from home. They experience overcoming fears and challenges as they conquer ropes courses, zip lines, and climbing walls. As a team they work on composting, and outdoor survival skills including building shelter and fire. At the conclusion of the two days students and teachers reflect around the campfire about challenges and successes they experienced. This is a life changing experience for my students, one they never forget!
