The Maid of Orléans and The Renaissance Man

My students need informational texts such as National Geographic as well as Tri-fold display boards to learn about Joan of Arc and Leonardo da Vinci, two important figures in European history.

My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and attend a school that focuses on project-based learning. As such, they are accustomed to working on collaborative projects and taking deep dives into several areas of our curriculum, including literature and art.

My students are at a dynamic age; they inquisitively view the world through lenses that are both curious and magical.

As their teacher, I am constantly exploring new ways to keep them enthusiastically engaged in all that we do. They always bring a lot to the table and never cease to amaze me.

My Project

My students need resources including multiple copies of biographies of Leonardo da Vinci and Joan of Arc, as well as a flag of Florence and a Joan of Arc coat-of-arms flag, to learn about two of the most important and fascinating people in Medieval Europe. These National Geographic texts are perfect resources for middle grade readers. Packed with information, primary source documents and colorful illustrations, they are the best I've found thus far.

Joan of Arc inspires us to follow our dreams and overcome daunting odds, where as Leonardo da Vinci was the true definition of genius.

Joan is a Catholic saint, the national heroine of France and an intriguing figure to everyone else. My students will use these books to conduct research for their Joan of Arc, illustrated research essays. Leonardo da Vinci will be studied, then students write newspaper articles about him. These acts as their introduction to history essays, MLA formatting and academic research in middle school. They will use the mini display boards to show off their new knowledge. I’m also including two flags; Florence and Joan or Arc’s cost-of-arms, as themed decorations during our study.
