My students need Sea Monsters, fossils, and Triops to take them beyond the walls of our classroom as we study and read about the ocean floor , ecosystems, and why the ocean is important.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty high school. The students here are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to help them explore the world around them through Science!
Our high school is made up of 90% economically disadvantaged students.
This may prevent them from having the life experiences many of us see as "typical" but it shouldn't prevent them from a good education and learning.
By providing these materials my students will be able to have a more hands-on learning experience that is needed in a subject like Science. By using games and labs the students become engaged in learning academic vocabulary and concepts. Learning begins to become less boring and more exciting.
I want to focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during my class. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire all of my students and set them on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
My students are excited about learning about a variety of science topics in Oceanography and Marine Biology. Hands on activities that allow learning that ranges from learning how properly dig and catalog ocean fossils, to measuring the salinity of an aquatic habitat, a habitat that is suitable for Triops, sea monkeys, and prehistoric sea monsters. This gives students knowledge and understanding of not only oceanography, but other possible science careers. As a group, they will have a chance to raise their own sea creatures and have the responsibility of maintaining the ecosystem. These supplies will help us not only cover our content area but will help students realize career choices in different science fields such as: anthropology, biology, ecology, geology, hydrology, botany, marine biology, oceanography, and zoology.
