Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students span across three preschool Special Day Classes for students ages 3 to 5. All students have social, communication, and behavioral differences that require special services and supports to access their education. Our students are eligible for special education services with classifications such as Autism, Speech-Language Impairment, Intellectual Disability, and Hard of Hearing.
Our students are working on self-help skills, pre-academics, and communication in order to prepare for kindergarten.
Our school is located in a high poverty area with families that have limited access to developmentally appropriate toys, books, and activities. Our students depend on school to access these resources and to further their development. The majority of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch and attend a Title I school.
My Project
Do you remember your favorite childhood book? Mine was 'Brown Bear Brown Bear'. I loved looking at the pictures and learning to read the names of all the colors. Many of our preschool students do not have access to these books at home and are not developing the memories that you and I take for granted.
"Children are made readers in the laps of their parents" -Emilie Buchwald.
Help us give our students books in both English and Spanish. Learning how to interact with a book is a vital skill for our early learners. This is especially true for many of our learners who are at risk for reading difficulties due to a variety of special needs.
We would like to provide all of our families with reading materials to help our students learn the basic of reading and to create lasting memories.
