As a middle school ELA teacher, you would think that I'd be up-to-date with all the teenage fads. I try to be, but sometimes things slip past. I didn't know what a graphic novel or manga was until last year, and I had to ask students where to buy them, what titles to look for, and how to read them (back to front, right to left, like a Japanese text). And still, I find them difficult -- the complex storylines, the aspects of fantasy and science fiction, the cute drawings, the backwards text. I'd rather not read them at all. They kind of give me a headache. Last year, however, I noticed a few students reading graphic novels they had taken out of the library. Then all of a sudden, they were everywhere. What's more fascinating is that students who had never gotten through one book were going through entire series. Students who had trouble staying in their seats during reading time were so engrossed in these books that they no longer became a distraction. Realizing the magic that is manga, I took a trip to my local book store and purchased a few. I was amazed at how quickly they were devoured by the children, the reluctant boy readers especially. It's my goal to help all of my students keep up their reading stamina and comprehension. Not every child is interested in reading a novel. There should be reading material that appeals to every child in my classroom library. While I try to keep it as diverse as possible, my graphic novel section is limited to a small supply of heavily worn books (heavily read during the past year!), and my funds are limited at this time. The addition of more graphic novels to our collection will make those reluctant readers serious readers!
