My students need a Cd and cassette player with headphones, a junction box, and classic read-alongs for our listening center as well as a mobile cart to hold everything.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How magical would it be for all students to access classic children's books? That is my wish for all of my students, to hear how the words on the beautiful pages can come alive. All children enjoy listening to stories and can follow along with a text as the narrator reads. Multi-sensory magic!
My students have each been diagnosed with learning disabilities.
They are reading below grade level and need a multi-sensory approach to learning in order to access and maintain interest in given texts. Many have not been exposed to the classic books that I would like to see them access through a listening center. My school is a Chicago public school and most of my students do not read at home on a regular basis and have not experienced the joy of books narrated to them. I am a resource teacher and do most of the language arts block with my 3rd-5th grade students daily. They are at a perfect age to thrive and take the path of loving to read yet need a lot of support to navigate that path. As my students have struggled with issues from comprehension and fluency to decoding and processing, reading has often been frustrating for these special learners. I want to share beautiful books with them on a daily basis to encourage their skills and their love of books.
My Project
I work in a small resource classroom so space is limited. I have a carpeted area under a window. I am moving my library off the ground to wall shelving so I will have room for a listening center. I have purchased throw rugs, bean bags, lamps, and huge pillows for the area. I have requested a mobile center so I can have it all in one stand and students can read and listen to stories in this cozy area. The books I have requested will allow students to enjoy classic stories and hear them come to life. Hearing a book on tape will allow students to hear fluent reading, motivate their own reading, listen to language, expose them to a range of reading styles, and offer endless hours of sheer enjoyment with classic books. With the headphones and jack the students can listen to stories at the same time and they will be able to listen to favorite stories over and over again. The more they listen, their comprehension and vocabulary will increase.
I have a guided reading table, computers center, and work centers.
I currently do not have an organized listening center set up. Now that I have reconfigured the space in my small resource room and have set up a cozy area, I know children will love to sit there under the lamps, on the pillows, and listen to beautiful stories. It will add another center to our rotations and keep students engaged in learning. Hearing books read on tape will help children see how the words on a page can come alive.
