The Magic of Books: Building Literacy in the Classroom

Help me give my students novels for novel studies to help encourage their love of reading and empower them to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice.

My Project

Novel studies offer several benefits for students, including fostering reading comprehension, building critical thinking skills, and promoting engagement in the classroom. They provide opportunities to expand their vocabulary, improve their writing skills, and build community with their classmates.

The majority of my students love getting lost in a good book, and my goal is to encourage their love of reading by selecting novel studies that are not only interesting to them but also offer important life lessons.

Both of the novels selected have been recipients of awards, such as the John Newbery Medal and the Mark Twain Award. The City of Ember is built around characters that are 11-12 years old, perfect for 5th grade students. In addition, the book contains a hero and a heroine, making it appealing to both boys and girls. The book contains themes like resourcefulness, coming of age, and the importance of knowledge. The Westing Game is a mystery book with diverse characters, engaging puzzles, and a fast-paced plot that keeps readers hooked. The book explores themes like teamwork, prejudice, and greed.

In addition, the rotating bookshelf will be a good place to keep our book sets when not in use, so that we can use them for many years to come.
