My students need a large rug to welcome them and create a cozy, warm and loving space within our classroom.

My Students
I teach in a low income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City where students live in apartment houses. 85% of our students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. The students are served breakfast, lunch and even an early dinner, for those students that stay for the after-school program. Many of our students come to school hungry and rely on the school meals for their daily source of nutrition.
There are 18 students, of different ethnic backgrounds and for many, this is their first school experience.
We have 10 students who do not speak English. The students speak Creole, Arabic, and Spanish. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, Arabic, and Jamaican. For the majority of the students, this is their first educational experience. Many of them have not heard stories being read aloud. Many students do not have educational toys, such as blocks, and LEGO blocks at home. The students come to my classroom to a place where they are comfortable: socially and emotionally. A place where they learn.
My Project
My classroom needs a large rug. The rug is our community space where we gather for mini-lessons, story time, independent reading and quiet time. The rug will make our classroom, which is housed in the BASEMENT of the building into a warm and cozy sanctuary. The rug will be a place to gather the young students for circle time. Students won’t question where to sit and won't spread out very far because the rug becomes the destination.
The rug will promote mental well being where we sit together for close companionship and comradely sharing of our interests and learning; it is the space where we create adventures within the old brick building in a hectic urban setting.
The attitude of the children changes completely the moment they set foot on the rug. They are calmer and ready to share out with one another.
The rug offers versatile seating with a bit of a cushion. It will buffer the noise and make the room feel quieter, even amongst the chaos. Rugs help with noise reduction, absorbing sound, rather than throwing it around. A rug promotes warmth, comfort and care. In an early childhood classroom, it is a necessity.
