My students need microscopes to observe and explore so they can acquire hands-on learning experiences in that make lessons stick.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It's been a long winter, and my students are hungry to explore nature. I'd like to fuel their interests through a study of the "microcosmos" within the walls of our classroom.
Like all children, my students are natural explorers and observers.
They have designed parachutes, tested flotation devices, grown greens.
70.4% of students are low income; a significant portion are ESL or have parents who speak little English. Our population is among those most under-represented in the STEM fields, an area increasingly important for future success.
Our playground abuts a highway and our neighborhood lacks open green space. Many students haven't had the outdoor experiences to explore the interplay of insects, animals and plants.
My Project
Inspired by the documentary film Microcosmos, I have plans for each student to experience and explore nature within our own classroom, using microscopes, rainbow makers, suncatchers and liquid motion tubes. What had been a picture in a book or on a screen will now be before them, in real life. Stereo microscopes--enough for students to view in teams of two or three--will introduce students to the tools of exploration, the instruments that fuel scientific discovery.
Many thanks for helping my students acquire the hands-on learning experiences that make lessons stick.
Seeing the magnified muscles of a worm in motion will make concrete the concept of locomotion. Suncatchers, rainbow makers and liquid motion tubes will make the abstract ideas of light, matter and density tangible.
