This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am creating life-long learners and lovers of reading and I need your help. I teach first grade in a high poverty community in California. My school does not have the resources that my students deserve...and therefore it is challenging to provide them with the outstanding education, equal to their more affluent peers, that I long to give them and that they deserve.

Due to the lack of funding, budget cuts, and the disheartening fact that schools in the inner-city frankly do not have the same resources or quality of literacy programs as schools in more affluent areas, I am in dire need of guided reading books for my students. First grade is a pivotal year for reading, and it is my goal to ensure that my students leave first grade knowing how to read and comprehend authentic text. My school does not currently have any leveled sets of books for my students to read during guided reading time and independently during independent reading. I don't want my students to be frustrated by reading books that are too challenging for them, or bored by books that are too easy for them. My students love reading, and I want to keep this spirit alive as they take this journey with me.

I have identified what I need to solve this problem: sets of books at specific reading levels for my students to read during guided reading, and also at independent reading. If I have these books, multiple students who are reading at the same level can benefit from my guidance at the same time during guided reading. They will feel empowered as they are successful in their reading, and they will quickly move up levels. The majority of my students are currently below grade level, and reading between levels D-F. This is why i am asking for sets of books at these levels. These books will revolutionize my reading program, as I will be able to differentiate for students with different needs, and I will be able to increase their reading skills dramatically.

You will be making a difference in the lives of these wonderful, beautiful children. If you met them, I know you would love them as much as I do. Their smiles make my heart smile, and all I want to do is make their lives a little bit better, and plant the seed in them that they need to reach their potential in life.
