My students attend a public Title I school in South Carolina. They are a great group of girls and boys that simply love coming to school and adore learning. My students have a passion for discovering new things and come to school daily hungry for more.
Our classroom is blessed with many diverse students, some who have learning disabilities, speak a foreign language and even a few who are newcomers to the United States.
It is our diverse population that makes us special and allows us to grow.
We all know that students grow as readers by reading every single day. However, our classroom is in need of books for our classroom libraries. My students need to read books that interest them and are on their independent level. The majority of our classroom library is made up of fictional texts, so we are trying to grow our library with informational text.
My students have become engrossed with the Civil War in Sudan after reading the novel, Home of the Brave; we were inspired by the courage and love of the main character.
My students are begging to learn more about this war and the Sudanese culture. It can be very tricky to find books and content that is appropriate for elementary students, but with these books my students can understand this complicated world issue.
