My Project
When people ask me what I do for a living, I often pause.
While it might sound odd to tell people that I am an encourager of stories, that is exactly what I do daily.
As a writer, my teaching philosophy takes root from my passion for language and for stories. I want my students to understand that their words matter.
Imagine my surprise several years ago when I found out that the majority of my 9th grade students do not know how to address an envelope and do not know where to attach a postage stamp. In fact, many of them over the past few years thought that a stamp was a "fancy sticker". Therefore, one of my commitments each year is to have my students write, address, and physically mail letters. Through this activity, they are able to hone their persuasive writing skills as they pen an "Outrageous Request".
While I personally feel that old-fashioned writing is important in our digital age, writing letters also gives my students a real-world audience. Instead of merely receiving a grade on an assignment, they are they are able to learn how to communicate with others in a way that does not include a keyboard, emojis, or a screen. Plus, we are able to meet many of the same standards and benchmarks that writing an essay achieves.
While in the past we have typed our letters and mailed them in our district's business envelopes, I added a neat twist a couple of years ago with bright and colorful paper, envelopes, and stickers to mail our letters. My teenage students are bright, quirky, animated. Never underestimate the power of stickers to keep an energetic teen engaged and occupied.
