The Lonely Hoop: Exclusive, Not Inclusive (Part 2!)

My students need a new portable basketball hoop to go along with their new wall mounted hoop that recently was funded through DonorsChoose.org. The padding is for safety!

My Students

"If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it." MJ #23. Our obstacle is a lack of PE equipment.

Currently, I work in a school that is transitioning to become fully inclusive.

I service students from grades 4 through 8; a majority of whom are currently on Individual Education Programs (IEPs). The needs of the students range from having a Specific Learning Disability to Intellectual Impairments. Medical diagnoses include Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, and DiGeorge Syndrome. All students receive direct instruction in the inclusion setting. They are a diverse group of students who are eager to learn, but at times the lack of appropriate equipment makes it a more difficult and challenging task.

My Project

As our school transitions into full inclusion, having the proper equipment will be necessary for my students' education. These students have a wide range of disabilities that make participating in the PE program more difficult. The equipment we are requesting is a new portable basketball hoop and padding for the edges for safety, which will alleviate some of the barriers these students face. The portable hoop we currently have is worn out and is of poor quality. The new equipment has a feature allowing height adjustment, which will benefit our students by making it more accessible. Having this equipment will allow students to have a safer and more efficient means to access the Physical Education Curriculum. In addition, it will benefit the school in regards to extra curricular activities such as the before and after school programs. It will also help the boys and girls basketball teams, as it will allow them to practice at school. Currently we travel to other locations for all games.

This project will change our gymnasium for years to come and will reframe how we teach physical education in our school.

Once we have a new portable hoop to go along with our last Donors Choose Project, a wall-mounted hoop, I am not anticipating having to replace it for many, many years. The two sets of backboard padding will protect the students from injuring themselves on the edges of the backboards. This will allow my students to have a gymnasium that they will be proud to call their own!
