This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Real artists take the misery and sadness of life and translate it into art"-Josh Peck. Do you remember a special performance from when you were a child? I am trying to capture that same sense of wonder and magic for my students.

My students are a group of talented and imaginative children that love to perform.

Unfortunately, most of my students cannot afford to purchase or even contribute to a costume fund for our show. Most of my students live in poverty but that doesn't mean their lives can't be rich in artistry. I teach in a struggling school in the South Bronx. Our students face many challenges in their life but they are spirited and hardworking.

My Project

Every year, the students perform a musical for the parents and students in our school community. This year, we will be performing The Lion King! My students have the talent and the drive but not the financial resources needed to create a play of this magnitude. We are in need of costume items like African print pants to help us bring our animal costumes together. These costume items will bring the dances to life.

I can't stress enough how important costumes are to any show.

Costumes give the show its zing and more importantly make the children feel special. There is nothing better than seeing my students' eyes light up when they try on a costume or dance with a prop for the first time.
