This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love puppets! It is funny to me since they are "big" fourth graders, yet give them a puppet and the smiles break out.

I teach at a Title I elementary school in a small southern town.

The majority of my class consists of minority students and English language learners. All students receive free breakfast and most students at my school receive free or reduced price lunch. Yet in spite of all of the "obvious" disadvantages that my students face, I have never had so much fun with a group of students. They love to learn, they love to play, and by doing both they are growing exponentially.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of puppets and five iPod touches in order to have my students record a puppet performance demonstrating point of view. My students will be given a story, such as Three Little Pigs, to explain, but with a twist. Their challenge is to create a 20/20 type documentary, using the puppets to perform and the iPod touches to record, in which each side gives their "point of view" as to what occurred in the story. For example, in the Three Little Pigs, they would have to explain both the point of view of the pig and the wolf. This project works in a variety of ways to "cement" the idea of point of view. I feel that when students have authentic creative tasks, the information they are learning becomes more deeply entrenched in their mind. They can think back to their experience and say, "Oh, I remember that!"

This project is important because it puts creativity and fun back into the classroom - two things that I have found really help students learn and achieve.

I can just see the excitement and smiles on the students' faces as they create their movie.
