This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
More than half of the students in my district are low-income and cannot afford their own books, so school is one place where they have access to books. I also teach a high population of English Language Learners, who find graphic novels more accessible and engaging.
Currently our 6th grade ELA classes have more students than we do books.
This requires us to procure our own additional copies of the text.
6th Grade ELA often feels like the turning point for students in their reading journey--for many students, middle school is when they can either fall in love with reading , or grow more and more skeptical of it.
In our final anchor unit of the year, we read "The Lightning Thief" and pair the full text with the graphic novel. We are just a few books shy of our goal of having a copy of the graphic novel for every student in the grade!
