This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school is in a culturally-diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.
Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere.
We are working to ensure that the media center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their multiple literacy goals.
My Project
I am asking for the books that are most highly requested by our students. I have a bright yellow suggestions box in my library, where students can requests books that they would like to see on our shelves. This Donor Choose project focuses exclusively on the titles that I see students asking for again and again.
I already have one or two copies, but with a student body of close to 900, I need more copies of the titles our kids most want to read!
The majority of these books are high interest, low reading level, which means they appeal to some of our most vulnerable readers. Developing a love of learning and reading can never happen without access to the books that genuinely interest our kids! Thank you for helping me get books directly into the hands of students!
