The Library: A Space for Learning!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I consider the entire student body to my students! I am my school's teacher librarian, and our school library is dynamic. The library is used for not only promoting literacy, but the space may be used for students who are writers one period and scientists the next! Our students range between 11-14 years old-- the perfect age to hone in on foundational skills, such as organization and studying. In preparation for high school, many of our students are exploring their interests through our selection of electives, getting the extra help they need from teachers during our weekly tutorial periods, and checking out books on a regular basis.

To support the vision of our school, our library is about learning and exploration.

Students see the library as the hub of our school-- a place where everyone belongs! The library is a safe place for all students, so my goal is to maintain the integrity of our space, while also showing students the library is an another classroom on campus.

My Project

After introducing the library and its resources to students at the start of the year, many students provided feedback regarding the physical space. Students expressed that our library was in need of places to go for book recommendations and book displays and places to get cozy and read, and I couldn't agree more! Flexible seating in our library will continue building our community, allow for choice, and promote literacy (who doesn't want to cuddle up and read a book in a comfy beanbag?!).

Likewise, in middle school, it's important that students are offered literature that is reflective of their own experiences and the experiences of others.

Current and relevant titles will be strategically displayed in places that students can easily see and access. Also, having a place in the library where information is posted using a whiteboard allows for students to conveniently have one place to check for library activities, schedules, updates.
