it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The necessity of a classroom rug is non-negotiable. My students anxiously await the moment I invite them to sit at the front of the classroom for discussions. The rug gives our class a space to learn and grow together. Additionally, the rug gives my students a spot to question their thinking and extend their knowledge through engaging class discussions and collaborative projects.
In our classroom, we utilize discussions and collaborative pairs daily to initiate and extend our learning.
This is because 90% of my class speaks Spanish as their first language. One of the most important things for their growth is increasing their conversational language so that they have the tools to express themselves and their understanding when we move on to academic language acquisition. Having a rug gives us a place to meet and share ideas rather than students being stuck behind a desk and talked at, I can engage them fully.
My goal is to create a spot for my students where they feel welcome and accepted. It is already difficult coming to a new school as a new student. Many of my students come to not only a new school but also a new country entirely. More than 50% of my class is either from a country other than the US or grew up in the US but speak Spanish as their first language. It is important to me to give my students an equal opportunity to learn and grow to the best of their ability despite any challenges they may face. This is why I am asking for a rug for my classroom. Please help my deserving students learn, grow, and change the world by supporting their foundation here at school.
