The ABC's of science vocabulary is anything but ABC. This is an example of some 3rd grade words - adaptation, boiling point, Celsius, decomposition, experiment, freezing point, gravity...and that is just a sample to G! The world of Science is all around them, they see it and they want to understand it!
The "Science Dictionaries for Kids" will allow my students to get a better understanding of the world around them through words.
Many of my students are still learning the English language, but that is not the only setback students face when trying to understand what it is I am saying when it comes to these 'new' words. The vocabulary of Science is an ongoing challenge for many adults, let alone 8 and 9 year old students.
I know my students feel confident that they can ask me for the meaning of words, but many times the students just want to explore the meaning of words on their own time. This is when they truly grasp knowledge...when they WANT to know the meaning of something and search it out for themselves!
Many of my students are faced with the challenge of language, but that does not hold them back from excelling at many academic activities at our school. The power of words AND the power of UNDERSTANDING those words will help my students be successful in many areas of their life
My Project
The "Science Dictionaries for Kids" will be useful for my students in a variety of ways. Not only will we be able to use these in our expository writing, but also while reading various non-fiction books in class and while preparing for the state tests.
As my students learn to create technical drawings of their observations and experiments, they will be able to utilize these dictionaries to better label their pictures and diagrams with confidence by knowing and understanding the meaning of these words AND of course proper spelling!
Do you know what a meniscus is? Well, I know my students would love to be able to look up that word and go "Oh yeah! I remember that word...that is when we used our graduated cylinders in our science lab." Hearing the word and READING the word along with SEEING a picture will only deepen their understanding of Science!
As a bonus they also includes charts, metric units, weather symbols, lunar phases, Moh's hardness scale, and a geologic time scale!
I believe that my students will always remember using these dictionaries in my classroom.
They will be able to use these in a relaxed way that will encourage them to want to look up "one more word"!
These dictionaries are engaging, easy to read and understand and are full of pictures to help give a visual for that odd word like "meniscus"!
Thank you for helping my students be better scientist in my classroom and for making science fun and enjoyable!
