My Students

Our Title I school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. My students are 5 years-old. They are an enthusiastic and hard-working bunch. The spectrum of developmental levels in kindergarten is vast, and I am working hard to meet the needs of all my students. Many of my kindergarteners are growing up in low-income homes and do not have access to the learning materials at home needed to promote their academic growth.

Regardless of the challenges they face, my students are highly motivated and love coming to school.

They look forward to playing, making art, learning to read and all the other wonderful things the world of kindergarten has to offer.

My Project

In my kindergarten class, play and art are very important. I offer my students a plethora of open-ended materials and see where their imagination takes them. They use craft sticks and yarn to make houses, barns, kites, puppets an abstract art pieces. They use beads and pipe cleaners to make sculptures and jewelry for friends and family. In my project, I am asking for various art materials so there's enough to go around and our art center is well stocked throughout the whole year. I am also asking for different pretend play materials, such as costumes and baby doll accessories. Through pretend play children learn to interact with their peers, make sense of the world around them, and develop essential language skills. I am also asking for Magna-Tiles Wheels so my students can build cars and trains.
