My students need materials (wires, magnets, a glue gun with glue sticks) to design and build self built speakers to give them a hands-on way to learn harmonics and electromagnetics.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Travel back in time, if you will, to junior year. You are writing college essays and deciding what career paths you are serious considering. The first essay tells you to share some challenge you've overcome and/or share your greatest accomplishment. Here is what my students can say: 80% of their class will graduate (20% high than the national average), many of them will be the first to go to college, they have made academic portfolios and defended them in public presentations, and in their Science class they engage in creative project -based learning, building critical thinking and social skills such as analysis, research, inquiry, and creative expression...and on a $400 budget.
My students are in the backyard of UC Berkeley, a STEM hallmark; yet, they have little hope of going there when they attend school in the most underfunded district in the bay.
Just 20 minutes away my students live in Oakland--an over-stereotyped and underestimated part of the Silicon Valley. This means that we,teachers, have to be "creative" in conducting labs without much equipment or technology that will give students a positive experience and prepare students for their wished-for careers.
My Project
I am asking for a variety of materials including Rare Earth Magnet Material, Magnets, Magnet Wire, two Hot Glue Guns, a box of Glue Sticks, and a set of Jewelry Pliers. These materials will allow my students to build their own speakers, as a transitional lab from our unit in harmonics to our unit in Electronics. Students will build their knowledge of how generators and motors works, based on Faraday's laws of electricity and magnetism.
This hands-on labs will allow my students to become scientists and understand science concepts, rather than simply read and memorize them.
Students will not only learn the physics' concepts of sound, energy transformation, closed circuits and magnetism; they will also build their science skills of group-work, investigation, and data analysis. Students will test different amounts of coils around the magnets and graph their data. They will compare data with the class and deduce mathematical relationships.
