My students need to have their own copy of Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner in order to able to annotate, take the book home and improve their reading fluency.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all."
This quote speaks to my project because I want to enable students to appreciate the beauty of literature and hopefully, enrich their lives by having their own copy of the book which they can interact with more freely.
My students come from all cultural backgrounds but unfortunately they do not have the means of buying their own books and it makes teaching a little more difficult since we can only use books that are in our school library.
At my school over 90% of the students are eligible for free or reduced priced lunch which means they live at or below the poverty line with minimal resources to improve on their learning experience. The majority of the 10th grade classes are comprised of students that are severely below grade reading level. They are, for the most part, motivated to succeed and I am certain they will feel privileged if they were given their own copy of the book we will be reading in class.
My Project
My students will be using their own copy of the book, The Kite Runner, to annotate specific passages (highlight sentences, pose questions in the margins, make connections to the assigned readings, look up unknown words and write definitions in the margins). We also do not have enough copies in our English book room for all students and even if we did, students would not be allowed to write in the books.
The study of this book will fall under the larger unit study of "Literature across the Globe.." Students will come to class having read an assigned chapter (since they will have their own copy they can bring it home) and be prepared to pose questions and analyze specific passages.
The idea behind my request is that students will be more likely to read, interact with the text and complete assignments if they know the book is theirs to keep.
For many students, the idea of someone giving them a book, is very foreign and will hopefully strike a cord in their mentality and enable them to have a better learning experience.
