Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of the children in our school are first generation Americans. Their parents come from Central and South America, the Caribbean and Europe. It is time our school library had some stories with protagonists just like our kids: children from abroad who are trying to make a new life here in the U.S.
Our school is located in South Florida.
Most of our children speak a language other than English at home. They learn English here at school. Of course, our students are not just torn between two languages. They have to make sense of two cultures, as well. And they face economic problems. Over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch because they come from households with low incomes. Their moms and dads tend to have low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. Language problems, culture clashes, money problems...a lot is going on in our students' world, and they need help to make sense of it all.
My Project
That's why I would love to have some books in our school library whose protagonists are like our kids: books about first generation Americans and the special challenges that face them. The 14 books in this project come recommended by the American Library Association (specifically, by its 'Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table'). They should appeal to a variety of ages and reading levels. Also, they have special library binding. Any book that is going to circulate through a library needs to be tough.
Please help our kids make the transition to their new country.
Let's give them reading material that shows them how to cope with and rejoice in having one foot in the old country and one foot in the new.
