This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As we transition to The Common Core, our course outlines and reading selections are also changing. Unfortunately, the school does not yet have the funding to renew textbooks, let alone novels.
I have two classes of Junior English in a large urban high school.
They are a diverse group with a large number of English language learners. They may not be the most voracious of readers, but as I expose them to more rigorous materials and projects, they are rising to the challenge.
My Project
Upton Sinclair's social commentary The Jungle about the meat packing industry and the immigration experience at the turn of the century is a challenging way to start of our unit of Argumentation/Persuasion. The novel will serve as a launching point for student inquiry into a contemporary issue we are facing today.
Students will be able to make connections between the novel and current issues we are tackling today in The U.S.
Immigration, food safety, pollution, working conditions, welfare, and unionization are all relevant and pressing issues our students are facing.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
