Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students began the year reading below or far below grade-level. With the help of the Listening Center and Read-Along books that we received from DonorsChoose, their reading skills have begun to improve. But to sustain that level of success, my students will need more of these books.
I teach a very diverse group of students.
Culturally, my students have roots in Mexico, Central and South America, India, the Philippines, Korea, Egypt, Iran, Belgium and various parts of the United States. Thirteen of my twenty-five students are English language learners. Most of my students come from working class families with limited resources to invest in their education, however, they are hard workers and extremely eager to learn.
My Project
Geometric shapes make it so much easier for my students to identify, sort, and learn about the characteristics of solid shapes. However, I currently only have one set of these shapes for a classroom of twenty-five students. I would like to have at least two more sets.
Likewise, Read-Along Books are a wonderful resource for building literacy skills. They provide a model of fluid, expressive reading and help students enjoy stories they would not be able to read on their own. Through an earlier project, we received seven books on CD. My students have been using them during independent work time to improve their reading skills. After a month and a half of working with these books, I have begun to see a positive impact on their academic performance. My students are reading faster, more accurately, and with richer expression than they did at the start of the year.
The seven books on CD that we received from DonorsChoose have been a wonderful asset to our classroom.
However, they will not last us all year. My students need additional titles to help them continue to build their reading skills.
