My Project
Bringing Joy and Learning to My Second Graders This Holiday Season. My second graders are energetic and enthusiastic seven- and eight-year-olds attending a Title I school in New York. Many come from low-income homes where holiday gifts are scarce, and for some, this may be their only opportunity to experience the joy of receiving something special for Christmas.
This project aims to provide my students with fun and engaging resources that brighten their holiday and support their learning and emotional well-being.
Christmas hats and candy: These small but significant items foster a sense of community and celebration in the classroom. Wearing hats during our class holiday activities creates a joyful, inclusive atmosphere, helping students feel connected and valued. The candy provides a simple treat that many students might not otherwise enjoy during the holidays.
Building a snowman kit: This hands-on activity encourages creativity and teamwork. Students will collaborate to assemble their snowmen, which promotes problem-solving and fine motor skills. They’ll also engage in storytelling, where each group can create a narrative around their snowman, fostering imagination and language development.
Slime kits: Slime is more than just fun—it’s a sensory experience that can be calming and therapeutic, especially for students who may face stress or anxiety. Working with slime helps improve fine motor coordination and provides an engaging way to explore scientific concepts like states of matter.
These resources will ensure my students have a memorable holiday experience while also benefiting their social, emotional, and cognitive development. Your support will make a lasting difference, helping them feel seen, valued, and excited about learning—especially during this festive season.
