Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a school that serves low income children. This has been a particularly difficult year, since budget cuts have forced the school to cut specialty classes that Kindergarteners would normally have. This has made me reevaluate my teaching practice so that I may provide my students with as many real life and fun loving experiences possible. Since the school has lost money due to the budget cuts, more money comes out of the teacher's pocket. Unfortunately, that usually goes toward arts and craft materials and your typical school supplies. I want my students to have a rich Kindergarten experience that is not dictated by an economic crisis.

During our FARM UNIT this month, my students were learning about how farms feed the world. One morning we made butter as a class and then ate it on bread. You would have thought I had just taken them to Disney World. They were so amazed that we could actually make something ourselves and then immediately enjoy it. I want to show my students that we can make and enjoy many culinary treats! My students come from working poor families. Their parents are trying their best to provide for their children. What that means, in many circumstances, is that their children are mainly being raised by other adults such as their teachers and after school providers. I want to make sure that I can provide my students with as many experiences as possible! They deserve it.

I am looking to provide my students with basic cooking tools so they can make a variety of treats! Cooking allows children to sharpen their literacy skills by following directions, sequencing events, and writing about it afterward. It also provides children with practical and exciting math skills. These materials can supplement a variety of units we study throughout the year IE. The Farm, My Family, All About Me, etc.

Your kindness will make it possible for my students to experience a wonderful part of life-COOKING AND EATING FOOD! Not only is cooking and eating together a communal activity, it is a fabulous learning experience. Cooking is a skill that these students can carry with them for the rest of their lives. For those students that have difficulty learning math and literacy skills in more traditional ways, it may build confidence when they see they are good at learning through cooking. If you could have witnessed the joy they exuded the day we made butter it would have melted your heart!
