Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach third grade in a Title I school, where my students come from low-income families and often face the challenge of adjusting to a new cultural environment. This transition can lead to feelings of isolation, especially if they struggle with language barriers or unfamiliar customs. Some children express these emotions through anger, using it as a way to cope with feelings of helplessness or rejection. Helping them understand and manage their anger is essential for their emotional well-being.
To support my students, I am seeking books on socio-emotional learning, anger management, and inclusivity.
These resources will help them develop emotional intelligence, build positive relationships, and embrace diversity. Additionally, I incorporate games that provide a safe space for children to express their emotions. Cooperative games encourage teamwork, while competitive games teach them to manage wins and losses—an important aspect of emotional regulation. Reading stories that explore emotions allows students to see their feelings reflected in characters, helping them process and understand their experiences.
