Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 10th graders have spent the semester learning to become more persuasive writers and speakers. They are passionate, enthusiastic, and creative young learners who love engaging in activities like 4 corner debates and Socratic Seminars.
My students come from a variety of ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds, and our community values diversity both outside the classroom and in our curriculum.
Through respectful academic discourse, my students are learning how to engage in sophisticated and meaningful discussions about social, political, and philosophical issues. Through literature, my students are learning to be more compassionate people.
My Project
By reading The Importance of Being Earnest, students will develop an appreciation for Oscar Wilde's humor and brilliance. His critiques of Victorian society will help them evaluate their own communities with a more critical eye and a greater sense of humor. The play is a great tool to teach students satire. In order to make the text come alive, students will create modern scripts and reproduce the play for their classmates.
After reading this play, students will also be better prepared for the AP lit exam.
Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite authors and humorists, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring his work into my curriculum!
