Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle schoolers love to read The Hunger Games! We'll read this high interest novel to engage with any topics such as media literacy, civil rights, and the role of government. The novel will be read as part of a 4 week project-based, integrated (Language Arts, History, P.E. and Econ.) unit.

Overall, we have a traditional middle school with a progressive staff that is working to transform into a place of community, personal growth, and academic rigor.

There are approximately 1,000 students at our middle school, and we are employing peace building and community building strategies to help students thrive during the tough times of pre-adolescence. We are striving to create a large middle school that feels like an extended family and is a safe, healthful place for students to learn about content, their peers, and themselves. Our school is a melting pot! About 40% of our students label their "race"/ethnicity as White, 40% Latino, 4% Black, 3% Asian and 2% Filipino, and 1% Native American. They are socio-economically diverse as well. Approximately two-thirds of our students are living near the poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The students at our school are full of life and love of learning. They are eager to grow physically, intellectually and personally.

My Project

In this project, students will investigate the roles of government and media in shaping our society. They will discuss basic civil rights that governments are theoretically formed to protect. Students will also look at how media shapes their values and defines entertainment. The students will analyze their favorite TV shows and see what key ideas are behind the productions. Special attention will be paid to reality TV and violence in media. Next, students will engage in reading The Hunger Games. They will have many reading, writing, listening, and speaking experiences throughout the reading of the novel. The audio book will be used to support their decoding and comprehension skills. As a culminating performance, the students will engage in creating their own ideal societies in which civil liberties and equity are a top priority.

This project provides students with experiences that increase their literacy skills, support their understanding of civil rights, and gives them frameworks for analyzing media.

This unit will truly be one of those engaging learning opportunities that students will not soon forget.
