Teens need to realize that reading a range of literature is essential to prepare for any career. Our tenth grade students are at the age when they decide whether they're in or they're out with college and graduation. Our students are high-need, and they lack the resources to maintain a rich literary environment outside of the classroom. We would like for students to create their own libraries at home, and this young adult novel will help create the interest for students.

Students have the opportunity to become role models in their communities. Many are able to continue to accredited universities with full academic scholarships. Others achieve their dreams with financial aid. Our tenth graders have these opportunities, but lack the confidence to read literary classics. There is a lack of interest toward reading, and high interest young adult novels can change this lackluster attitude.

The House of the Scorpion is a great young adult novel by Nancy Farmer that mixes the culture and language of the majority of our students. The connections to the situations, emotions, and descriptions can serve as platforms to guide interest in all types of literature. Students can overturn the attitude that reading is "one note" or old-fashioned. They will see that reading and writing are interconnected and that reading examples of great writing yields great writing.

You will empower these students in multiple ways. Your contribution will allow students to begin to bridge the gaps between literature and their lives.
