My Project
Sometimes all it takes is one good book to get you 'hooked' on reading. I was the student who absolutely hated even the thought of reading a book beyond the textbooks I used in class. It wasn't until I was in High School that I begin to learn to love reading for personal enjoyment.
Miraculously, I somehow ended up with a short novel that once I began to read lead me to become eager to read the next in the series and all the ones after!
So, I understand what it's like to loathe reading but I also understand what it's like when that spark is ignited and the world beyond reading a textbook opens up.
Recently, many of our middle school student were asked which book they would bring with them if they knew they would be stranded on a desert island and when I read many of their responses my heart was broken. Not because they could not give a book title, but because the books they mentioned were often 4 or more years below their current grade level. Additionally, most were Graphic Novels and not very literacy rich. After a few conversations with some students I realized many of them are just like I was at their age, reluctant to read outside of class.
So here I am, on a mission to try to 'hook' some children to learn to love reading with the engaging and relatable stories in the Bluford Series Books. It is my hope that their spark happens long before they reach high school and that the adventures they will experience through reading will take them places they'd never thought imaginable.
