I teach Language Arts to all fifth graders. I work to give them exposure to real life situations. They are so eager to learn and love using "Literature" in class.
These students love learning about history and the world around them through literature.
They are so eager to share their perspectives, and practice learning to respect the opinions of others. Historical fiction introduces them to characters who have different points of view and offers examples of how people deal differently with problems.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to learn about the brave people that saved the lives of many Jewish families through the eyes of a child their age. Number the Stars is a novel told through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie. We will read about how Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. Students will learn heroism of an entire nation that there wand be reminded of the pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war. Students will benefit through working on the following literary elements:
*Inference
*Theme
* Characterization
The students will benefit from reading this book across the curriculum
Learning Outcomes Across the Curriculum:
*Social Studies-- history and time lines, geography and maps, World War II, the Holocaust, patriotism, Jewish cultures
*Science-- Denmark's Black Sun and natural resources
